Eastern Harps GAA club are deeply saddened at the sudden passing of P.J McKeon. He played a prominent role in the inception of the club in 1973 and worked tirelessly in every facet of the club there after. When logos were allowed in the eighties P.J immediately was on hand and his business Sligo Farm Service was the first to adorn our senior jerseys and indeed it was these jerseys that were worn in 1993 when Owen B Hunt was won by our senior team.
His brilliant wit and turn of phrase made him an excellent PRO and his GAA match reports were knowledgeable and greatly appreciated. Following the sad passing of his son Kerry (RIP), who had commenced writing Sports blogs for our website, P.J stepped in and wrote a further fifty covering a range of topics not all GAA related but containing little nuggets of information across a wide spectrum of topics. These blogs were greatly enjoyed by all who read them. However, he was most at home sitting in the corner of a bar with a pint of Guinness regaling stories, some that were fact with maybe a line or so of fiction included for maximum effect. Everyone is his company was sure to be well entertained.
In later years, PJ always maintained a keen interest in the club’s on-field and off-field development activities. He was delighted with our new clubhouse and with how our numbers at underage girls and boys have flourished.
PJ and his family proudly support the annual Kerry McKeon Literary award and he was thrilled with the way this competition evolved over the last few years with huge numbers entering the competition named to the memory of his son, Kerry.
To his wife Mary, his family of Amanda, David, and Karl, son in law and daughters in law, and his grandchildren and of course his brother, sisters, and extended family we offer our deepest condolences.
Ar dheis De go raibh a hanam dilis.
